The Dhoti is another ancient garment found all over India. In modern India it has evolved into a man’s garment but during period it was very popular with both men and women. There are many different ways to wear a dhoti, this is just one of them. You will need a 5.5 yard sari for this wrap. If you have a shorter sari, that’s alright simply ignore the steps where the fabric is passed around the waist.

First, stand with the fabric at your back. On the left hand is the mundi (the undecorated side) and about 1.5 yards of fabric. On the right hand side is the pallu (the ornamental side) and the remaining length of material. Tie a square knot under your navel with two “bunny ears” of material.

Second, pleat the edge of the mundi and then pass it between your legs, under the skirt like section in back. Tuck the tip of material into the center back of the waistline at your rump. You might need to shorten or lengthen this material in order to avoid having an unflattering bulge between your buttocks.

Thirdly, make one large pleat of fabric on your right hand side by folding the sari back over your right hip and then forward over your left hip. Tuck in at the waistline to keep it secure.

The final step is to gather up the remaining material into a long snake-like length and wrap it counter-clockwise around the waist (this works well for a belt if you need to hang a pouch or a mug-frog). When you have gotten to the end tuck it in or let it hang like a little tail over the rump. Adjust as necessary
